GateKeepers' Responsibilities

BEFORE The Race

  • When you get to your gate assignment
    complete the "GATE JUDGE DIAGRAM CARD" side of your "GATE JUDGE CARD"
    using the correct symbols u=Blue Flag, m=Red Flag and @=Gate Judge Position (Where you are standing).
  • Make your sample drawings BEFORE the run starts.
  • Where is NO free skiing on the race trail, side slip or snowplow only.
  • You must wear your GATEKEEPERS BIB, so races can identify you if they have a question if they made a valid pass of your gates.

    DURING The Race

      • FAULTS
        Mark ONLY the FAULTS.
        Draw racers path through your gates and indicate their number, Racer(s)#.
        You can use the same drawing if more than one racer had the same fault.
        If a racers ski comes off, they are Disqualified (DQ) make a note on your card (J4's & J5's can continue??).
      • VALID PASS
        Valid pass = both boots and ski tips break the plane of a gate (the imaginary line drawn between the poles of one gate),
        A racer can go through a gate in any direction.
        If you are not sure, give the benefit of the doubt to the racer.
      • COMMUNICATE
        If a racer falls/misses a gate, you are only to respond if the racers asks you.
        you should say "BACK" if they missed a gate.
        You should say "GO" if they made a valid pass of all your gates.
      • FIX-IT
        • Velcro panels on gates - reattach (if not familiar with, look at before run starts).
        • Missing or broken gates - do whatever you can to get the gate in before the next race comes, then call up/down to HOLD race to make a permanent fix.
        • If broken, let the race crew know if it is an outside or inside gate, the color of the gate and the number of the gate.
        • Help the race crew member when they arrive with the repair.
        • Don't move around when a racer is in sight.
        • Yell COURSE when a racer is coming and someone doesn't know the racer is coming

    INTERFERENCE
    If a racer is interfered with, the racer MUST

      • Leave the course immediately and
      • Report to the nearest gatekeeper or official.

    You should

      • Write down what happened, so the racer can receive a rerun.
      • If possible, let an official, someone with a race radio, a person on a spot headset or
        yell up/down to let timing know that the racer was interfered with and should receive a rerun.

    AFTER THE RUN

    • After completion of the run give your "GATE JUDGE CARD" to the head gatekeeper at the bottom of the course. 
    • DO NOT leave the hill until this is done or your card will be INVALID and can not be used.
    • If you have faults you must be available (at ATC or to the jury) until the protest period is up.

          AFTER THE RACE

          • After completion of the race (second run) please help the race crew.
          • Bring down all of your outside gates and place them in a neat pile at the bottom of the course.
          • You must go down to the ATC office sign out and pick up your vouchers if you are not a season pass volunteer.
          • If you don't sign out you will not get any credit for working that day.
